“The total mightiness of this organism is what I want to resemble with my pictures. To achieve this I climbed countless fire escapes in Tokyo and tried to capture the complete force of nature. The photos are not about single buildings, they are about the completeness of the urban jungle. All elements have the same importance, and the further you look into the image, the more windows can be seen per square centimetre.

The pictures were shot mainly in twilight. The magic hour, where the houses are shining as bright as the residual daylight in the sky and the colourful neon signs melt with the green-blue of the beginning night. For me this is the most beautiful colour theme a city can offer.” - Thomas Birke

Enoc Perez’s paintbrushless architecture

“Viewers captivated by Pérez’s seductive imagery might also be taken with the artist for an entirely different reason: his idiosyncratic, strictly brushless technique. Until recently Pérez had not picked up a paint brush in 20 years. Instead, his custom had been to make a preparatory drawing on paper for each color to appear in the finished work, apply oil paint to the back of these sheets, and then hold them up to the canvas. At this point he traced over the sketches so that the paint stuck, effectively drawing the image onto the canvas.”

Auerbach’s RGB Colorspace Atlas

As part of an exhibition with MOMA entitled Ecstatic Alphabets/Heaps of Language, Tauba Auerbach has created a piece that visualises the RGB colour field in three dimensions, not too unlike a psychedelic stack of Post-Its.

“Human eyes typically have three types of colour receptor on their retinas, each sensitive to a different range of wavelengths of light. The colours associated with these wavelengths are approximately red, green, and blue. Because there are three types of colour receptor, it is possible to map the visible spectrum in a three-dimensional spatial model by assigning red, green, and blue each to a dimension. It is then possible to outline a cube in this space, where the values of red (R), green (G), and blue (B) are visible on a gradient scale of 0 to 100% in their respective directions. These gradients combine to create the RGB colour space cube, a volume in which any colour can be located by a set of three coordinates. RGB Colourspace Atlas, both a sculptural object and spatialisation of colour, consists of three books. Each volume contains the entire visible spectrum mapped out over 3,632 pages, representing the RGB cube sliced in a different direction: vertically, horizontally, and from front to back.” - MOMASee the video and more on the work on the MOMA microsite.

City as Canvas: Uniformed Mimicry

The photography duo Giesen and Leenders have created a series of monochromatic photographs that posit the figure in colourful urban spaces. This playful body of work shows matching figures merging with their environment. The duo always attempts to pair inventiveness with technical expertise, apparent in their meticulous direction of each image. They always uses their own bodies as props in their work, here uniformed to surrounding color scheme.

“The inspiration of the series Mimicry came from the uniformity of persons. People from whom the identity is missing and those who are inconspicuous in our society. Just like animals they adapt to their environment. Visually in this series it is shown by the use of similar costumes, position and gender. Favela Intervention

The street art collective Boa Mistura see their work as an urban intervention, that utilises the digital technologies of 3D perspective onto the haphazard landscape of the favelas of São Paulo, Brazil. These site specific color field paintings project an optical illusion - viewed from a specific angle and distance, white text spelling out words such as ‘beleza’ (beauty) and ‘orgulho’ (pride) seem to float in midair. The group worked with residents to cover corners and passageways with vibrant colours in the shanty town and painstakingly detail every lightpole, brick, and pipe with the white lettering.

“We like to feel the place, talk with the local people, breath the atmosphere and be inspired before start working,” Purone said. “Because when you make a street intervention, it is linked to a particular place, and you need to have dialog with the environment.” - Pablo Purone of Boa Mistura, 2001
